This, in addtion to the two below should tell a story without my using words. That's the point of the assignment so, I guess I don't really need to blog about them...

High Knees

I like this picture because I feel like the power possesed by the drum major (the man in the green shirt) can be felt simply by looking at his stance and the nature of the young men's faces.

The Fountain

This photo was taken on the campus of Norfolk State Unviersity. The first thing I thought of when I approched the fountain was "lines". I love how the row of plants leads you to the fountain which also provides another line that directs you upward instead of forward.

Looking Back

I cropped this photo because I only wanted to capture the subject's head and what he was looking back at. Had I left the photo as it was, the rule of thirds would not have worked in my favor so, I made the neccessary adjustments.

Pole Vault

Being a pole vaulter myself, I find chose this picture for two reasons. One, because I like how it appears as if the person jumping has commanded everyone's attention at the moment. The angle of his body is nice as well. I aslo like this photo because he actually cleared this hight which is somewhat unbelievable considering a technical error or two.

Tee Pee

I recentley went to a track meet ant Wake Forest University and it was after they, from what I was told, won a big basketball game and the students celebrated by tee-peeing their own campus. I took this picture because one would imagine a tee-pee'd school to be a sight for soar eyes but it was actually a nice sight. I like the triangle formed by the three threes and the tissure blowing in the wind. I also find it to be a bit of an oxymoron that tee-pee'd trees are in front of a building that looks like it is of prestige and imporance.

Crossing the Street

Forgive me if I don't have a deep reasoning for this picture. I was testing out capturing people in motion with my new camera and this one didn't come out too bad. I like it because it looks like he's crossing the street out in the city somewhere when he's actually on a college campus (the taxi in the background mad the photo a little humerous for me, as well).

Student Union

I took this picture during the early afternoon and I noticed the triangle made by the two side walks and the building in the distance. I edited the photo slightly afterwards just for the sake of making in more interesting.

Mother and Child

Everytime I see this baby, she's sleeping so I took advantage of the opportunity to take a picture of her while she's awake. I chose an angle lower than that of her and her mother simpy because it was interesting and I wanted the mother to be unaware of the picture so she didn't pose. I also chose a lower angle so that attention would be better drawn to the baby (who is looking directly at the camera as if making eye contact with the viewer).

Highs and Low's

Yes, I like pictures of trees. I took this photo because of the clouds and the height of the trees. I saw the dark clouds rolling in on what was a , fairly, sunny day. I tend to be drawn to darker tones as opposed to bright ones. I also found it, somewhat, funny that the two trees in the front are taller than the two right behind them as if they were puropsely lined up in order by height.

In your own shadow

I was looking out the window from an upper floor of the student union building when I spotted this young man walking. I found this shot interesting because of the relation between the body and the shadow. It looks as if the young man is staring down at his shadow and the angle of the shadow causes it to appear as if the shadow is looking back at him.

Look Up

Oddly, I love the time of year when the leaves fall from the trees and most are standing tall and leafless. The tree in the photo, in actuallity, isn't as tall as it seems so, I decided to shoot the tree from underneath to make it appear taller and more grandiose, it looks as if the tree goes on forever.

Swagger

Swagger
Originally uploaded by Candace.Shoates
This is a photo of my father's dog, Swagger. I chose this photo mainly because of the lines of the cage as well as the angle. The angle makes Swagger's cage look a little more spacious than it actually is and the bars of the cage on the left, right, and center help frame him will. His "what are you doing in my cage" stare also helps enhance the photo.

Sky

I took this photo via Blackberry. I chose it because of the natural beauty of the clouds in the sky. In this photo, the technique I had in mind was the rule of thirds. Granted, one may see the tree as the most distinct object in the photo, because of its position in the photo, one's eyes directly go to the clouds and the somewhat of a white, blue striped pattern that can be seen.

Mime

This is a picture of my younger brother during a mime performance at church. Because of where I was located (a balcony in the back of the church) I was limitied in ways I could compose the shot so, since I know the performance, I waited for parts where I knew emotion was shown very distinctly. I chose this photo because of the slightly unusual position of his body along with the expresion of anguish and/or desparity on his face that is often seen in mime performances and expressed in gospel music.
